Find Relief From Painful Foot Warts

Warts can mimic other skin conditions and can be difficult to identify and treat appropriately. It is especially true for plantar warts that often grow hidden under thick skin on the bottom of your foot. The only visible sign is just a small bump under the skin, but plantar warts can be extremely painful when you put weight on your foot.

There are wart treatments available over the counter, but they are often ineffective in treating plantar warts. To prevent regrowth, the doctor must remove the entire wart, so be sure to visit our foot doctor for the proper care.

Common treatments for painful foot warts include the following:

  • Debridement and salicylic acid—After numbing the area with a local anesthetic, your foot doctor will use a debriding tool to help remove the thick skin that often covers plantar warts. Prescription-strength acid is then carefully applied to the wart to melt it away.

  • Cryotherapy(freezing)— Once liquid nitrogen is applied to the exposed wart to freeze it large pieces will break off. It can be combined with acid treatment for complete removal and ensure the wart doesn’t grow back.

  • Surgical removal—In severe situations, a deeply embedded wart will require surgical removal. A specially designed cutting tool called a curette is used to carefully cut out the wart.
