Stone bruises

Stone bruises can occur if you don't wear supportive shoes, particularly if you run or walk a lot, or step on a hard object. In addition to pain when walking or standing, you may also notice that it feels as if you're walking on a small stone. Luckily, heel bruises usually get better without any special treatment in a few weeks.

Plantar fasciitis

Inflammation is the cause of your pain if you have plantar fasciitis. The condition affects the tough band on tissue on the bottom of your foot that runs from your heels to your toes. You are more likely to develop plantar fasciitis if you spend long hours on your feet, are overweight, are between 40 and 60, have a low or high arch, or participate in sports or activities that stress the heel.

Achilles tendinitis

Inflammation can also affect your Achilles tendon. If you have tight calf muscles or a bone spur, you may be more likely to develop the condition. It can also occur if you decide it's time to become more dedicated to your exercise routine. When you run or walk longer than usual or train harder without giving your body time to adjust to the new routine, you may stress the tendon.

Retrocalcaneal bursitis

It's not always easy to tell if you have Achilles tendinitis or retrocalcaneal bursitis, as the pain occurs in the same area. The retrocalcaneal bursa, a sac filled with fluid, sits under the Achilles tendon and helps the tendon slide over the bone effortlessly. When it becomes inflamed due to an overuse injury, you'll experience heel pain.
