Instead, you feel a sharp, stabbing pain coming from your heel. No, you didn’t step on anything; chances are good that you might be suffering from plantar fasciitis. What is plantar fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the soles of the feet from the toes to the heel bone. If the fascia is overstretched or overused this can lead to inflammation and heel pain.

How do I treat heel pain?

Luckily, heel pain can often be treated with simple conservative care. The best thing you can do is to avoid strenuous and high-impact activities that can exacerbate your heel pain. Rest is key to improving heel pain. Other treatment options include:

  • Taking over-the-counter pain relievers to reduce swelling and pain
  • Icing the heel for 10-15 minutes to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Performing certain foot stretches and strengthening exercises several times a day
  • Placing custom orthotics (shoe inserts) into shoes to provide additional cushioning and support
  • Wearing a night splint to reduce morning stiffness and pain

When should I see a doctor?

If you’ve never had heel pain before then it’s a good idea to turn to our Hackensack, NJ, foot doctor for an evaluation so you know whether you are dealing with plantar fasciitis or another condition. Since there are many issues that can lead to heel pain it’s important that you are following the right treatment plan.

  • You are dealing with severe pain or swelling
  • You aren’t experiencing numbness or tingling in the heel
  • You can’t put weight on the foot
